Acrylic nails piont upwards

I have searched and searched and I have yet to find anybody who has written about this topic..I guess I will be the first...So I have been getting my nails done for the past month in hopes to grow out my natural nail. I was so pissed when I realized my nails kind of point upwards thinking the lady at the salon screwed them up so I had to ask..She had told me that the reason the nails are slightly pointing upwards was due to the fact that some of my natural nails grow in that direction. I really didn't notice as my nails have been growing that they grew in that direction. Basically its just something I will have to deal with if I get my nails done. I thought it was a bit funny that with glue on nails they didn't do this and with acrylics they did.I hope someone somewhere has this same problem too..I just find it strange that I have yet to find a post anywhere about this so if you have this problem and are reading this comment below so I know Im not the only human on this earth with funky hands haha.

  1. To me, that sound a bit strange. Cause if you have not experienced that with other nails I don´t understand why you would experience it with acrylic nails. I know nothing of acrylic nails so I don´t know but it just sound weird :/
Im thinking that if your nails grow like that then you should have experienced them pointing slightly upwards all the time, no matter what you use.

    1. It's apparently quite common, usually with people who have a history of nail biting, but not always. The direction of nail growth is altered. It is not so apparent with natural nails, especially if they are kept short. The issue becomes much more apparent as layers of acrylic are applied, especially with several fills, each adding another layer to increase the height of the upward angle.

There is placement of acrylics that can help combat this, but it requires an experienced nail artist/tech. The upward angle will still be evident, more with each fill unless you have a new set pretty often.

    2. It's more to do with the length of the nail. Layers of acrylic will only make the nail seem thicker. The longer the nail, the more lifted it appears to be.

    3. Hello. I have been getting acrylic nails for years, and i went to a different salon yesterday and I suddenly have the same problem. I had to have four tips replaced and they are the only ones sloping upward. I think the tips that they use could be the problem.
Yes, the tips have a lot to do with it

  2. nothing about it is normal..but on the bright side my nails have grown out a a lot and my nail beds are finally starting to grow..i use to bite and bite so there was a lot of trama to my nail causing super small nail beds. I have just been getting acrylic put over the top of my natural nail as the tips fall off since my nails still peal the second they hit water

  3. I have this problem! my nails go upwards and it makes me upset because I am desorate for long nails (acrylics) but when I get them super long people point my problem out to me!!

  4. I have this problem as well. Reason being is because I've been an extreme nail biter all my life. The tip of my fingers are very thick which makes the gel or acrylics overlay never look flush to my nail bed. I'm hoping if I leave them on long enough this problem will go away.

  6. If they put tips on your nails it can make them look like they are growing upwards because they put the tip too far down on the nail. As it grows out it should go down.

    1. They screwed mine up bad. not only did they put them too far down but they did not tip them with the way my nail curves down they took them the opposite way and pointed them up in the air like I v shape from my nail to the fake tip

  7. I have the same issue. I had a nail tech in the past that noticed so he with no problem compensated for that with how he applied the acrylic, I never had them point up again. My issue was solved!! I quit getting my nails done go years. Until today, just got a sculpted full set today and they they all are drastically pointed upwards, I hate them. 70$ wasted

    1. I do my own nails at home and they all always point upwards. KNOWING that I'm not alone I feel a lot better.

  8. Me too. My little nail and nail next to it all point upward when I get acrylics and the rest are fine. It annoys me as I notice it and I see other nail biters get acrylics and they're fine! I'm a nail biter too...

  11. I have this same problem and I hate it. I was a nail biter and I have stopped now in hopes it will grow out and correct its self... but as long as i can remember they have done this.

  12. I have the same exact problem and have searched and searched for something to be posted about this issue. I too have always been a nail biter and my pinky, ring finger and middle finger nails all point upwards when I have acrylics on. I was told the same thing by a nail tech- that my finger nails naturally grow that way. If you look at your natural finger nail closely, you can see that it does grow with a slight upwards direction. I’m not sure the science behind it. But, I’ve had nail techs who can work magic and make my acrylics curve over my finger so it’s not noticeable and I’ve had nail techs completely fail at that. There are different “tips” that have a much curvier shape, they are called Eagle Claw tips, I’m wondering if they would help make our nails curve better than the standard tips.

  13. I have really long nail beds and my nails curl down but when the nail tech did my nails he left my real nails curling down underneath the fake ones which curl the opposite direction straight up in the air and then he put acrylic on top and they actually flip in the opposite direction that they really grow and it looks awful

  14. My nails do the same exact thing, you are definitely not alone! My pinkie nails and my ring finger nails are the only ones that do it though! I was looking for a post like this because I wanted to know how to fix it, but guess I can’t haha! ):

  15. its how you apply the tips, there is a ridge and this fits snugly over the end of the natural nail, if you put it too far down this ridge sits oddly and its not a snug fit, this causes the upward slant

  16. I just got my nails done today and a few of my nails also pointed up a bit so I also thought that they messed up but maybe my nails also grow in that direction.

  17. I have mine done currently and I promise you it's completely normal. The reason is that the nail bed, right by the cuticle, grows straight, however if you have a history of nail biting, the skin has grown where the nail is about to grow, so the nail tilts upwards.

With stick ons, they're from the very base of the nail, meaning the glue forms a 'bridge' that acts as a platform to make it grow normally. If you apply clear stick ons, you'll notice there's a "air bag" under the nail.
When applying tips, they stick only onto the part of the nail that was bitten, that has eventually tilted upwards.

This is completely normal with people who used to bite their nails.

  18. Its not normal!!! I am a biter too.
I had the same problem. Few full sets caused they to stick up. one set it was every nail and now a recent new set only 2 nails. I had a great technician who i am going to go back too and she said its because the glue for the tip isnt put right on the edge of your own nail causing a gap and for it to lift.. she has fixed 2 sets of mine in the past so i wont be going anywhere else in future when she is busy.
